Instrument Rating Program
FAA Requirements (FAR §61.65)
One IFR Cross-Country
– At least 250nm total distance.
– Along airways or ATC-directed routing.
– At least three different instrument approaches.
– Landing at three different airports.
40 Hours Actual or Simulated Instrument
At least 15 hours must be dual training with a CFII.
50 Hours Cross-Country PIC
Must include 10 hours in airplanes.

Time building is the process of logging the required flight hours as Pilot in Command needed before qualifying for your Instrument Rating Checkride. Under 14 CFR §61.65, a pilot must have at least 50 hours of cross-country PIC time, in addition to the instrument training requirements.
